What is Veteran's Aid and Attendance?

Veteran’s Aid and Attendance is an amount added to a VA pension benefit for wartime veterans who require assistance with the activities of daily living. Receiving this benefit does not affect a person’s eligibility for coverage such as Medicare or TRICARE. Depending on the circumstances, a person may qualify for Veteran’s Aid and Attendance, Medicare, and also Medicaid.1

The Aid and Attendance pension can be used for any purpose the recipient chooses provided it is for the benefit of the veteran or their surviving spouse. Most commonly, veterans will use it to pay for personal care at home or in assisted living which are services not typically covered by health insurance (although they can be covered by Medicaid,1 if the person is Medicaid-eligible).  Learn more about the eligibility requirements and benefits of the Aid and Attendance pension.
